KARL LOWRY

Location:

  • Fountain Lake, AR

Research Interests:

  • My potential thesis agenda focuses on our Nation’s beginning of seeking freedom.

US History: 1750-1800: From the Pre-Revolution Roots through The American Revolutionary War and Foundation of the Constitution.

Arkansas History: 1819-1836: From Territory to Statehood

My Story:

  • Never stop chasing your dream and trust me, the universities are not going out of business. This might be some of the best advice I received in 1985 when I chose a career instead of college. Over thirty years later, I am closing in on my high school goal to become a teacher.

My life began as the first generation born in the US on my mother’s side to Greek immigrants that arrived in 1964. My grandparents came from rich families that afforded them the best schools available. Education was a high priority in my upbringing and only now am I engaging it at the highest levels. Better late than never has them smiling down upon me.

I made a drive to Russellville in 2017 to meet Dr. Blanks and I knew I was home. The History and Political Science Department is loaded with some of the best professors and people I have known. Here, I became more than a student and instead was part of a family. The curriculum is well prepared, and an array of topics are available connected to history.

In 2021, I begin my journey towards my MA History focused on teaching soon. My commitment to studies has opened doors to many schools across the nation, but I am exactly where I want to be at Arkansas Tech University. World-class education across from Feltner’s Whattaburger, what more do you want?

    Go Tech!

KIMBERLY ELLEN FOSTER

Location:

  • Springdale, AR

Research Interests:

  • My favorite area is American History, specifically the nineteenth century with an emphasis on the Civil War, Southern history, and African American History. Some of my other favorite areas are the Revolutionary War, the Gilded Age, the Progressive Era, World War I and World War II.

My Story:

  • My “mentor” and former teacher, Mr. Watson, has always pushed me and believed in me and his guidance and friendship began my passion for history.  I will always credit him for showing me how fascinating history was. If you’re interested, you can ask me the first time I met him in class! It was that first moment that I knew I wanted to be absorbed with history. I used to compete in yearly National History Day competitions because of him, and I always placed at the state level and I was 15th in 2014 at the national level of the competition. My NHD projects ranged from the Little Rock Nine, FDR and his “fireside chats”, Tuskegee Airmen, to Louis Zamperini. I still have all my medals I won and these competitions have really highlighted the importance of learning history. My career goal is to teach on the college level; however, I wouldn’t be opposed to working in museums either. My original career path was to be a museum curator but now I think I would like to teach others about history and why it is great!

PHILIPP BURNETT

Location:

  • Fayetteville, AR

Research Interests:

  • Military History (with emphasis on commanders, weapons, and battles)

European History (from the Antiquity to Modern Times)

Ancient History (with primary focus on Ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt, and Ancient Rome)

My Story:

  • I was born and raised in Saint-Petersburg, Russia. Ever since I was little, I was passionate about history, specifically European, Military, and Ancient Histories. Having been born and living in the “Museum under an Open Sky” – as Saint-Petersburg became known – I was surrounded by history which only deepened my interest in the field. That same interest motivated me to seek a university degree in the subject. My college career began first at Arkansas Tech University, which I attended before transferring to University of Arkansas graduating it in December, 2020 with major in history and minor in English. Having decided to come back to ATU to pursue my education further, I wish to succeed at getting a master degree in one of the three interesting topics I have listed above.

LEONARD CHILSON

Location:

  • Pyatt, AR

Research Interests:

  • My interest lies mainly in American History (except for WW1 and events after Viet Nam). But also enjoy the history of Japan, China, and Korea, and Western Europe/Russia. The growth of South Africa and the Boers/Zulu/British engagements are of great interest. Have little interest in Central/South American history and culture. I am going for my Master’s degree as a way to improve my knowledge of history, and look at areas from the viewpoint of other scholars. It’s also a challenge that I look forward to facing.

My Story:

  • High school class of 1968 (3rd high school attended), B.S in Hotel Administration from U.N.L.V. in 1993, and B.A. in History (magna cum laude) from Arkansas Tech in May, 2019.

Air Force brat, born in Fairbanks, the Territory of Alaska, raised in Nevada, South Dakota, Ohio, Maine, New York, Turkey, and Florida. Nine schools in twelve years.

Been in the restaurant business, from dishwasher, to line cook in Las Vegas, to managing. In hotel business from desk clerk/nite auditor, to managing, to assistant housekeeper at the Luxor in Las Vegas, overseeing 756 rooms, 56 maids, 4 supervisors, and 4 housepersons.

Was a senior tax advisor for HR Block before going off to learn to be a barber.

Retired in 2010 as a barber due to a bad back, moved to Pyatt in December of 2015, and have written 10 historical novels since that move. Four of them were written while I was attending Tech!

I write in two genres: Historical fiction based on the same family lines throughout American history. Starts in the Civil War, through the war with the Cheyenne and Sioux, and to ancestors during the Pontiac Rebellion of 1763 to the American Revolution. The revolution looks to be at least 3 books, the first which is published. The series is called The Road to Destiny.

The second genre is Historical Romance, each one based on actual war event covering from one day to five days. It flows back and forth between the battle and the relationship with a girl. All are told in the first person. The hook to this series is the last word(s) of each chapter is/are the first word(s) of the ensuing chapter. Also, I always write the last chapter first, since I know how it is going to end. How the story gets there is a surprise to the reader…and me!

I do extensive research for each book to be sure historical aspects are as correct as I can get them. My books, at moment, are all self-published and most of my readers are women (who love the stories in both genres) and are carried in libraries in Harrison, Yellville, Chino Valley, Arizona, and Waverly, Ohio. I am hoping to find an agent or publisher to take me on.

I have eleven published novels…5 in the romance category, and 6 in the destiny series. And have a new romance, and two in the destiny series being written at this time. Areas being covered is Isandlwana (romance), The revolution from the end of the bunker Hill fight through Valley Forge, and the Johnson County War in 1889 Wyoming (both destiny series).

I have three dogs, Cheyenne (Chesapeake Bay Retriever), Mozart ( red heeler), and Mr. Bates (heeler/border collie mix). I love to read and do newspaper crossword puzzles and enjoy $6.00 cigars!
