and Ponferrada. ULE offers 53 higher education degrees taught in 17 centers by a total
of 26 departments. The total number of students is 13,000. León is a centuries-old
city, a settlement and crossroads on the Pilgrims' Way to Saint James of Compostella
[Camino de Santiago]. It lies about four hours away from Madrid, two from Salamanca
and roughly the same from the North Coast of Spain. The city is easily crossed on
foot, which makes it easy for travelers to get to know its streets and its inhabitants.
It has a great deal to offer visitors, both cultural and a wide range of festivals
and celebrations, some recognized internationally, like its Holy Week parades and
ceremonies. Safety and an atmosphere of calm are also striking features of this city.
