PEER MENTOR PROGRAM

Mission Statement

The mission of the Green & Gold Excel: Peer Mentor Program (GGE) is to facilitate a unique connection between newly enrolled students and a positive, influential Green & Gold Peer Mentor (PM) on the Arkansas Tech University-Ozark Campus. The GGE will focus on the development of academic and personal growth and the competencies important to a first-year student’s success.

Program Goals

The Green & Gold Excel: Peer Mentor Program aims to assist the Mentees in their transition to Arkansas Tech University- Ozark Campus. The GGE primary goals for each cohort are to:

Increase retention of newly enrolled students.
Provide new students with the information, support, and encouragement they need to be successful within their respective major/program.
Provide support and resources to help students adjust academically and socially to the campus community.

Role of a peer mentor

Green & Gold Excel Peer Mentors (PM) are responsible for mentoring a small group of students (Mentees) through meaningful conversations and unique experiences. PMs are expected to be a resource to their Mentees by, but not limited to, providing information about the campus/resources, sharing their experiences as a first-year student, meeting with Mentees (1:1 & as a group), answering general questions, and attending planned trainings and events.

The Peer Mentors participating in this program will have the opportunity to:

Gain Volunteer Hours (can be used for AR Future Grant)

Develop transferable and marketable skills to enhance professional experience
Increase self-awareness and foster personal growth
Cultivate leadership, organizational, and self-management skills
Improve communication and interpersonal skills
Expand professional resume
Support student success in a meaningful way

Qualifications

Have and maintain a 3.0 GPA and be in good academic standing throughout the academic year
Commit to the position for a full academic year
Must be enrolled for a minimum of 3 credits in both semester terms
Actively participate in Peer Mentor Trainings, events, & SSC workshops throughout the academic year

Peer Mentor Responsibilites & Expectations

Serve as a positive role model and resource for up to 3 college freshman Mentees
Meet with their group of mentees at least twice per month throughout the academic year
- One of those meetings will be held in the Student Success Center
Conduct weekly check-ins with their Mentee(s).
Participate in training
Become familiar with the various resources available to students on campus
Assist new students in making a healthy transition to college
Completion of Peer Mentee Review(s)
Communicate and work with fellow Peer Mentors to uphold a positive and collaborative group dynamic.
Communicate with the Student Success & Disability Services Coordinator any issues that arise with your student mentee.

Role of a Mentee

Green & Gold Excel Mentees are newly enrolled students, including but not limited to, conditionally admitted students, first-generation students, transfer students, and/or a student wishing for additional guidance and support. Mentees are expected to actively communicate and meet with their Peer Mentor, attend and participate in planned events and workshops, and positively engage with the resources available on campus.

Qualifications

Commit to the program for a full academic year

Mentee Responsibilities & Expectations

Actively seek advice and guidance from a Peer Mentor
Meet with their Peer Mentor at least twice per month throughout the academic year
- One of those meetings will be held in the Student Success Center
Communicate progress and concerns to their Peer Mentor
Participate in all activities/workshops with a Peer Mentor and other Mentees
Set SMART goals and constantly work towards achieving those goals.
Utilize campus resources
Complete Peer Mentor Review at the end of each academic semester
