When Catherine Martin had decided to direct The Taming of the Shrew as her final project, Tech was undergoing a transitional period regarding the Theatre program and the use of the theater. This, however, proved to be beneficial, as she was able to incorporate meta-theatre characteristics when the play was going to be performed without a backstage area. In preparation of her final project, she researched staging for Shakespeare, dramatic literature, Tom Stoppard, and meta-theatre.

Catherine says, "It was much harder than a paper because I still had to do just as much research for paper, but then had to apply my research in the real world. It was a blast. Directing a full-length Shakespeare play is never easy, and very time-consuming...I learned that even though you may not have ideal situations, you can make good theatre. Proper research will lead to great results."
