Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) for Faculty & Staff
CPL stands for Credit for Prior Learning. It is a way that you can give students credit for work that they have done in the past. This is often a test or a portfolio of work to show that they have achieved that learning.
There is a $40 per credit hour fee charged to the student for the award of the credit.
1. Student Identifies Relevant Experience
- The student should review the course requirements for their degree plan and the course descriptions and determine which of their past experiences, such as work, military service, certifications, or professional experiences, align with the courses in the degree plan.
2. Complete the Application Process
- The student then contacts you and/or their advisor for your assistance in helping identify which CPL assessment is appropriate and complete the application process
- The student will locate the "Credit for Prior Learning" card on OneTech and click
to pay the CPL assessment $40 credit hour fee.
- The student should provide you/and or the department with proof of payment before proceeding.
3. Assessment of Prior Learning
- Student completes the CPL assessment.
- You and/or your department review the CPL assessment and determine if CPL is awarded.
- If credit is awarded you will submit the Institutional Credit form on OneTech.
- The Institutional Credit form is found on the "Academic Documents - Faculty" card
on OneTech.

- Once the form is approved it will be processed by the Registrar's Office and the credit will be added to the student's transcript and Degree Works audit.
Stipends are available from Academic Affairs for developing CPL as follow:
- Update existing CPL materials
- Adopt a comprehensive written online exam
- Develop a comprehensive written or online exam
- Develop a skills-based exam
- Develop a portfolio assessment
- Develop other type of CPL assessment
