How long will I be in ELI?
Your score on the TOEFL will place you in a level. Each level takes 8 weeks to pass. If you test into level 4, you will be finished with ELI in one semester (8 weeks in level 4 and 8 weeks in level 5). If you are a graduate student, you must take level 6. If I’m going to graduate school, do I need to take ELI classes?
Yes, but only if you do not pass the TOEFL. Graduate students can be placed into any level of ELI depending on their TOEFL score. To exit ELI, graduate students must pass level 6 before they can register for university classes.
What different countries are represented in ELI?
We have had students from Saudi Arabia, China, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, India, Thailand, Nigeria, Tanzania, Guatemala, Vietnam, and Kuwait.
Do I have to take the TOEFL before applying to ATU?
No, you do not have to take the TOEFL before applying for Arkansas Tech University, but you must take the TOEFL before being admitted into ELI. If you meet our English proficiency requirement, then you can progress to the University without taking the TOEFL or ELI.
Where can I take the TOEFL?
Arkansas Tech University offers the TOEFL exam twice each semester. When students arrive for registration and orientation, we offer the TOEFL.
If I pass the TOEFL, do I have to complete all ELI levels?
If you have a passing TOEFL score, you do not have to complete ELI before taking university classes.

What is ATU’s English proficiency requirement?
Depending on if you are an undergraduate or a graduate, you must meet one of the following requirements. Undergraduate Applicants Minimum Requirements
61 on the Internet-based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
5.5 on the IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
500 on the written TOEFL
173 on the computerized TOEFL
42 on the PTE (Pearson Test of English)
Grade 2A on the EIKEN
For transfer students from US colleges/universities, one of the above mentioned test score documents can be provided or an official college/university transcript showing successful completion of college-level English Composition I and English Composition II with a grade of C or better. A copy of the official TOEFL or IELTS score may be sent by email. The school code for Arkansas Tech University is 6010 if you want to have your TOEFL score sent directly from Educational Testing Service (ETS).
All EIKEN scores must be sent directly from STEP, Inc. (Society for Testing English Proficiency).
NOTE: Test scores are only valid for 2 years. Please submit only those scores taken within two years from the time of application.
