Cosmetology is a fascinating career choice. It consists of learning about the care of the hair, skin and nails. A student learns hairstyling, cutting, coloring, permanent waving and chemical relaxing. Students also learn skin care, make-up application, manicuring, pedicuring and artificial-nail application.
Cosmetology is not just hairstyling; students can pursue a career as a make-up artist, skin-care specialist, nail technician, educator or salon owner. Students attend theory class each day. This instruction is either lecture, demonstration or videos. Students practice cosmetology skills each day in a salon atmosphere. Practice occurs first on a mannequin head or on other students. After a student has accumulated 200 clock hours and performs skills at the required level of proficiency, they are then allowed to work with the walk-in clientele under an instructor's supervision.
