Title: Outdoor Education Instructor/Naturalist

Description:
The program combines a unique opportunity to work in varied curriculums and educate children in natural
resources and forensic sciences. We have two sites that we will hire instructors for, they include: Pickens
Educational Center in Pickens, SC where we teach our CSI program (forensic science) and R.M. Cooper
4-H Leadership Center in Summerton, SC where we teach our Teaching KATE program (natural
resources).
Teaching Kids About The Environment is a three-day residential, interdisciplinary, hands-on learning
experience for students from grade three through grade eight. The academically-based classes in forestry,
soils, water ecology and wildlife resources make up the backbone of the program. Instructors guide the
students to a greater understanding of the natural world and the inter-relationships between the four areas
of study. Teaching KATE was developed by YLI and the Coalition for Natural Resources, and is endorsed
by the S.C. Department of Education and is held at RM Cooper 4-H Leadership Center in Summerton, SC.
Experience the exciting and spellbinding world of crime scene investigations through CSI: Clemson Student
Investigators held at YLI Headquarters and Education Center in Pickens, SC. Designed for fourth through
eighth grade students, CSI brings an incredible learning adventure where students become forensic
investigators, solving mysteries with math, forensic science and technology. Students perform hair, fiber
and soil analysis, pH tests, handwriting analysis, paper chromatography, fingerprinting, footprint casting
and more!
Principle Duties:
• Regularly teach at least two curriculum components in the program
• Develop and teach at least one elective component relating to some environmental issue or personal
interest.
• Lead students in daily program activities (wake-up, flagpole, meals, canteen, and campfire).
• Be actively involved in all program activities, leading and participating in evening recreational and
instructional times as scheduled.
• Assist with routine clean up and set up of program areas.
• Crew is a large part of your duties during the Spring. Each spring, rowing teams and their coaches
travel across the United States to train at R.M. Cooper Leadership Center for Spring Crew

• Perform direct supervision of children while involved with activities.

Qualifications:

The Fleet and Family Readiness Program (FFRP) division of Commander Navy
Installations Command (CNIC) provides a variety of installation support
services to the worldwide Navy community, including recreational and leisure
programs. These programs are offered through Morale, Welfare and Recreation
(MWR) and Child and Youth Programs (CYP) to sailors, their families,
military reservists, retirees and authorized civilian employees.
Our primary goal is to match students' skills and objectives with MWR
departments that can accommodate their needs. Students learn how to apply
educational concepts to real-world situations as they discover a possible
career path at the same time they can complete University requirements to
earn their degree. While helping themselves, they are also positively
impacting the quality of life of the Navy community. While availability may

2011 Visitor Services/Interpretation Internship
Seney National Wildlife Refuge
Seney, Michigan
Seney National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula was established in 1935 for the protection and production of migratory birds and other wildlife. Seney is located midway between Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. At nearly 96,000 acres, Seney NWR is one of the larger National Wildlife Refuges east of the Mississippi and is exceptionally diverse in both the number of ecosystem types present and the number of wildlife species using these habitats. Thousands of visitors come to Seney NWR each year. The Refuge offers numerous recreational opportunities including a seven mile Marshland Wildlife Drive, roads open to biking, a self guided interpretive hiking trail, canoeing/kayaking, bird watching, nature observation, hunting, fishing, photography, hiking and a visitor center.
From May to October 2011 Seney NWR has two Visitor Services internship opportunities.
Major duties and responsibilities include: Visitor Center operations; develop and present programs; work on special interpretive projects; assist with bookstore operations; plan, organize and conduct special events; assist volunteers; and post updates on Flickr and Facebook pages. Opportunities to assist other programs (maintenance, fire, etc.) may be provided if time and schedules allows.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: A successful applicant should: be energetic and responsible; be able to work independently and in small groups; have good public speaking and group management skills; and have good writing skills. Experience leading programs and working with the public is desired. Knowledge in natural history, biology and bird identification is helpful. A valid driver’s license is required. Preferred applicants are pursuing studies or a degree in interpretation, environmental education, parks and recreation, or a related field but applicants with other backgrounds will also be considered.
Logistics: A 12 to 15 week internship is available. A $200/week food allowance will be provided to interns. Housing and laundry facilities are also provided. A vehicle will be provided for work purposes.
Uniform shirts will be provided, but pants or shorts (shorts, jeans or pants must be in good condition) and closed toed shoes must be provided by the intern. Interns work a 40 hr. week including some weekends and evenings.

Internship Positions Available
Mount Rushmore National Memorial announces 12-16 week internship positions with the Branch of Interpretation and Visitor Services.
Position Title: Interpretation Intern
Position Description: Interns will research, develop and present interpretive talks and guided walks on a variety of topics related to the extended themes of Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The intern will staff the information desk at the Information Center, and Visitor Center providing visitor information about the park as well as information about other local attractions. Visitor assistance will be provided by answering telephone and mail requests for information. The interns will perform informal roving interpretation in high-use areas and will serve as assistant to the speaker at the evening program. Other duties may involve special projects, such as library cataloging, brochure stocking, and audio-visual cleaning and maintenance.
Qualifications: Interns must have a background in the natural sciences, history, public recreation and/or communications fields, enjoy working with the public, and demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills. The interns must be able to follow written and verbal instructions, work independently and complete assigned tasks within specific time frames.
Requirements: An interview will be required by telephone or in person. The positions are 12-16 weeks, 40 hours per week. Schedules will include two consecutive days off. Intern may be required to work holidays, weekends and evenings. Must wear provided uniform. Must provide own transportation to and from Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Personal transportation is recommended but not required. There is no public transportation to or from Mount Rushmore.
