Tech Museum receives collection preservation tool

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (February 25, 2008)---The Arkansas Tech University Museum of Prehistory and History is one of 851 museums, libraries and archives around the United States selected by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to receive the IMLS Connecting to Collections Bookshelf.

The selection means that the Tech Museum will receive a set of books, online resources and a user’s guide that will improve its ability to care for items in its collection and preserve them for future generations.

The Tech Museum is one of just eight entities within the state of Arkansas to receive the IMLS Bookshelf.

“Receiving this award will provide an invaluable resource to the Tech Museum staff as we strive to maintain high standards of archival care for items in our collections,” said Judith Stewart-Abernathy, museum director. “Many of these books are specialized references, and therefore expensive to acquire. These publications will provide a readily available resource to enhance collections staff training, increase knowledge about new developments in museum-level archival storage and aid collections staff in continuing to develop and provide on-going, basic preventive conservation efforts to preserve these irreplaceable items.”

The IMLS Bookshelf was made possible by the American Association for State and Local History with support from the Getty Foundation, the Henry Luce Foundation and the Samuel H. Kress Foundation.
