NSLS to host leadership events on Saturday

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (November 29, 2007)--The Arkansas Tech chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success is hosting a leadership training and speaker series beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Doc Bryan Student Services Building Lecture Hall.

The leadership training will last approximately three hours and will include a video with individual and group activities. Lunch will then be provided, followed by the speaker series event.

The speaker on Saturday will be Janet Attwood, and her topic will be “What Career or Major Should I Choose?”

“The purpose of National Society of Leadership and Success, also known as Sigma Alpha Pi, is to receive training from the best speakers and trainers in the nation,” said Katie Billings, publicity director for the Arkansas Tech chapter of the organization. “Also, it teaches people that they can achieve anything by meeting with a small group of people in which they talk about their goals and obstacles. In these groups, people learn from the other team members and get advice on how to succeed in achieving their goals.”

Billings said that similar events will be hosted by the Tech chapter of Sigma Alpha Pi throughout the remainder of the 2007-08 academic year.

“After coming to three broadcasts, three success networking team meetings and the leadership training day, the student will be certified in leadership and success skills and will then receive a certificate from the national office,” said Billings. “This leadership certification is great on a student's resume. Ninety-two percent of society members landed the job of their choice upon graduation, according to a national survey done in 2003. Another benefit of this society is that members can have personalized letter of recommendations and are provided online access to job banks.”

Billings said that the National Society of Leadership and Success is one of the newest student organizations at Tech.

“This is the first time this club has been at Arkansas Tech University,” said Billings. “Elizabeth Norman is the president and she is doing a great job getting this club together. To get into this society, a member must be nominated by two faculty members or administrators on campus.”
