Campus Announcements: September 25, 2007

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (September 25, 2007)--Below is a collection of recent announcements of news from around the Arkansas Tech University campus.

            Brief announcements like these will periodically be gathered and placed on www.atu.edu as a means of informing the campus community of events at Tech.

Student flu shots available Oct. 1

Beginning Oct. 1, flu shots will be available free of charge to all Arkansas Tech students at the university’s Health and Wellness Center in Dean Hall Room 126.

On Oct. 8, the flu shots will be made available to faculty and staff for $10, which must be prepaid at the Office of Student Accounts. Please call the Tech Health Center at 968-0329 to set up an appointment.  If you do not have an appointment, the health center cannot guarantee you will receive the shot.

Undergraduate research funds available

The Arkansas Tech University Undergraduate Research Office invites applications for funds to support undergraduate research for the 2007-2008 academic year.

For 2007-2008 academic year, a total of $34,000 in internal funds will be available to the Arkansas Tech Undergraduate Research Office to fund 12 undergraduate research proposals. The maximum budget allowed for each proposal will be in the $2,500-$3,500 range.

Research proposals in all academic disciplines will be considered for funding. A more detailed description of the support available and the application process is available at (http://pls.atu.edu/uresearch/) under the link "Research Grants."  

Full proposals should be submitted to Dr. Mostafa Hemmati in McEver Hall Room 32 no later than Oct. 5, 2007.

Walt Disney World to present internship opportunities

            Walt Disney World will make a pair of presentations at Arkansas Tech on Tuesday, Sept. 25, for students who might be interested in internship opportunities with the Disney organization.

All majors and all classifications are invited to attend one of the presentations, which will be made in the Doc Bryan Lecture Hall at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.  

Disney employs hundreds of people in all fields nationally as well as internationally.

Up ‘til Dawn Awareness Week ongoing

The week of Monday, Sept. 24, through Friday, Sept. 28, is Up 'til Dawn Awareness Week at Arkansas Tech.  

Up 'til Dawn is a new fundraiser on campus that pits teams of six people against other teams in an effort to raise as much money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as possible.  

As part of Awareness Week, there will be information booths in Chambers Cafeteria from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and in Doc's Place from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.  

If you are interested in joining or starting your own team, please pick up a registration form in the Office of Student Services. Registration forms are due Oct. 1.

Fall Fest booth applications due Sept. 28

            Applications for your organization to have a booth at Fall Fest are due Friday, Sept. 28, at 5 p.m. in the Student Services Office at Doc Bryan Student Services Building Room 225.   

Fall Fest will be on Wednesday, Oct. 17, from 4-8 p.m. For more information, contact Matt Kreimeier at sab@atu.edu.

50-Minute Tour of Latin America on Sept. 28

The Arkansas Tech International and Multicultural Student Services Office (IMSSO) invites the campus community to come attend a presentation by our international students entitled “A 50-Minute Tour of Latin America” on Friday, Sept. 28.

The presentation begins at 12 p.m. in the Doc Bryan Lecture Hall and will last 50 minutes.

Tech tennis team to host fundraising tournament

The Arkansas Tech Tennis Team will host a Fall Fundraising Tennis Tournament Oct. 27-28.

The tournament will start Saturday morning (Oct. 27), and scheduling accommodations will be made to allow participants to attend the Tech football game that afternoon at 1 p.m. The tournament will conclude Sunday evening (Oct. 28).

The events being played are men's and women's singles A & B, Men's & Women's Doubles A & B, and Mixed Doubles A & B. The entry fee for Tech students is only $10 per event (must have a new Tech ID).

All other entry fees are $20 for one event and $35 for two events. Each participant will receive a t-shirt. Awards will be made for the first place, second place and consolation. The tournament will be played on the new Arkansas Tech tennis courts at the Chartwells Women’s Sports Complex.

School of Business schedules China Experience trip

In March 2008, the School of Business will again be offering Tech students an extraordinary international business experience with its fifth annual Arkansas Tech University China Experience.

This international travel experience brings the global economy and international business into perspective for Tech students. Plans are now being finalized for the Tech China Experience 2008 that will include visits to Beijing and Shanghai, tours of state-of-the-art business endeavors such as a computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) Nokia cell phone factory, a modern Coca-Cola bottling plant and one of the largest automated steel mills in the world at Shanghai's Baosteel, along with traditional Chinese tourist sites such as The Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and more.

The trip is from March 21-31 and the cost for students is only $1,995 for those students who register by Nov. 1. The cost is inclusive of international airfare, domestic transportation, accommodations, meals, attraction entrance fees, trip insurance and Chinese visa. Only your passport and personal expenses are not included.

Volleyball hosts Bacone College on Thursday

            Arkansas Tech will host Bacone College for a non-conference volleyball match at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at Tucker Coliseum. There is no charge for admission.
