RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (March 11, 2008)—Below is a collection of recent announcements of news from around the Arkansas Tech University campus.

            Brief announcements like these are periodically gathered and placed on www.atu.edu as a means of informing the campus community of events at Tech.

Principles of Collegiate Success class begins this week

            Students needing a 3-hour course to maintain academic eligibility and those simply wanting to improve their study skills can enroll in Principles of Collegiate Success (CSP 1013), a course offered by the Arkansas Tech College Student Personnel program.

            One section of CSP 1013 is offered on Monday and Wednesday nights from 6-9 p.m. It began on Monday, March 10. The other section will meet on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6-9 p.m. and will begin on Tuesday, March 11.

Student Activities Board to host Big Money Bingo

            One of the most popular student activities of each academic year will return to the Arkansas Tech University campus on Tuesday, March 11, when the Student Activities Board presents Big Money Bingo beginning at 9 p.m. in the Young Building Ballroom.

            Last year’s prizes included a laptop computer, airline travel voucher, Nintendo Wii video game system, digital camera, Apple iPod and much more.

HPEWS Club to host pickleball tournament

            The Arkansas Tech University Health, Physical Education and Wellness Science (HPEWS) Club will host a doubles pickleball tournament on Tuesday, March 11, in Hull Building Room 112.

            Registration is $10 per team and will begin at 6 p.m. The tournament is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. Each team is guaranteed a minimum of two matches.

            Pickleball combines elements of table tennis, badminton and tennis. It was invented in 1965 near Seattle, Wash., by U.S. Congressman Joel Pritchard, William Bell and Barney McCallum. The game is named after a family dog, Pickles, who was fond of hiding the pickleballs in bushes near the court where the game was first played.

Norman Hall Galley presents works of David Mudrinich

            “David Mudrinich: Images from the Tallgrass Prairie” will be the featured presentation in the Norman Hall Gallery from March 3-31.

            The opening reception has been rescheduled for Thursday, March 13, from 3-4 p.m. It was originally planned for March 6, but had to be postponed due to inclement weather. Refreshments will be served and the artist will be there to answer questions and give a brief gallery talk. Admission is free.

            The Norman Hall Gallery is open weekdays from 8 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. For more information, call Neal Harrington at (479) 964-3237.

Dog Obedience Class begins April 1

            The Arkansas Tech Department of Continuing Education will offer a course in dog obedience at the Lake Point Conference Center this spring.

            The course will meet on Tuesdays from April 1-May 6 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Cost is $80 for those with a valid Arkansas Tech identification card, $90 for the general public prior to March 28 or $100 after that date. Sheri Davis serves as the instructor.

Golden Suns earn bid to NCAA Tournament

Arkansas Tech University will send its women’s basketball team to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second consecutive year and for the eighth time since 1998.

The Golden Suns (25-5) learned on Sunday, March 9, that they will be the No. 2 seed in the NCAA South Regional at Cleveland, Miss., March 14-17. Tech will face Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion Tuskegee University (21-9) in the first round on Friday, March 14, at 1 p.m. If the Suns win their first-round game, they will play in the regional semifinals at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 15. The regional championship game is at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 17.

This will be the 18th time in their 31-year history that the Golden Suns have advanced to national postseason play. In addition to its eight NCAA Tournament appearances (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2008), Tech also made one trip to the AIAW National Tournament (1980) and nine trips to the NAIA National Tournament (1987, 1988, 1989, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997).

The Suns were NAIA national champions in 1992 and 1993 and NCAA Division II national runners-up in 1999.
