Poetry slam coming to Doc’s Place Tuesday
The Arkansas Tech University Student Activities Board will host a poetry slam contest at Doc’s Place inside the Doc Bryan Student Services Building on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 8 p.m.
Shihan will be the feature poet and master of ceremonies for the contest. A National Poetry Slam champion, Shihan has been featured on a variety of media outlets, including seven appearances on HBO's “Def Poetry” and five national tours.
Deadline to sign up and compete for cash prizes is Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. in Doc's Place.

Junior Auxiliary of Russellville offers scholarships
The Junior Auxiliary of Russellville is offering four scholarships to Arkansas Tech University students for the 2008-09 academic year.
The scholarships are an Arkansas Tech book scholarship ($500), an Arkansas Tech education scholarship ($1,800), the Marge Crabaugh Scholarship ($1,175) and an Arkansas Tech nursing scholarship ($1,175).

HPEWS Club offers self-defense class
The Arkansas Tech Health, Physical Education and Wellness Science (HPEWS) Club will host a self-defense class on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. in the Hull Physical Education Building Double Gymnasium.

Museum Store re-opens at Techionery
The Arkansas Tech Museum Store has moved to the Techionery building and is celebrating its grand re-opening through Thursday, Feb. 14.
The store has jewelry on sale for 35 percent off, T-shirts as low as $5 and coffee mugs as low as $4. There is a large selection of children's literature, old-fashioned games, toys, craft kits and a collection of regional history books for adults.
With every purchase of $10 or more, shoppers will receive a free mug while supplies last.
Tech Museum Store hours are Tuesday-Thursday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Wonder Boys, Golden Suns on road at CBU Thursday
Arkansas Tech University’s basketball teams will celebrate Valentine’s Day with a trip to Memphis, Tenn., to take on Christian Brothers University for a Gulf South Conference doubleheader at Canale Arena.
The nationally-ranked Golden Suns (18-3 overall, 7-1 GSC) will face the CBU Lady Buccaneers (16-5, 4-4) at 5 p.m. Thursday. The Wonder Boys (14-7, 5-3) will take on the CBU Buccaneers (12-9, 4-4) at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Russellville radio station KWKK 100.9 FM will broadcast both games, and the broadcasts will be streamed over the Internet at http://athletics.atu.edu/tech-web-schedule.htm.
After Thursday’s trip to Memphis, the Golden Suns and Wonder Boys will prepare to host Southern Arkansas University for a GSC basketball doubleheader at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville on Saturday, Feb. 16. Tip-off for the women’s game will be at 4 p.m. Saturday. The men will begin their game at 6 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free with a valid Tech identification card.
Wonder Boys continue baseball homestand
Arkansas Tech will continue its season-opening, 13-game baseball homestand this week by hosting a pair of teams from the Show-Me State at Tech Field.
The Wonder Boys (2-3) will entertain Southwest Baptist University (Mo.) for a doubleheader at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13.
Tech will welcome Northwest Missouri State to Russellville this weekend for a four-game series beginning with a single game at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15. The series will continue with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, and it will conclude with a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17.
In other Tech spring sports news, the Golden Suns tennis team opens its spring season on Tuesday, Feb. 12, with a match in Conway against Hendrix College; the Wonder Boys golf team is in Lakeland, Fla., for the Matlock Collegiate Classic on Feb. 11-12; and the Golden Suns softball team will be in Tunica, Miss., for a six-game classic Feb. 15-17.
