RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (November 29, 2007)--From the late 1930s through the mid 1950s, America was captivated by the radio drama.
During those days before the widespread availability of television, the ‘theatre of the mind’ entertained and sparked the imagination of a country on the dawn of a revolution in mass communication.
On Friday, Nov. 30, the radio drama will return to the airwaves in Russellville when a group of Arkansas Tech University students broadcasts a performance of the play “Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Engineer’s Thumb” at 7 p.m. on KXRJ 91.9 FM. The broadcast will also be streamed over the Internet at http://kxrj.atu.edu/broadcasting.shtml.
The radio play is an adaptation by David J. Eshelman, assistant professor in the Arkansas Tech Department of Speech, Theatre and Journalism, of a short story written by Arthur Conan Doyle.
Friday’s broadcast is the first effort by a new troupe of voice actors known as the Arkansas Radio Theatre. The voice actors include Tech students from major fields of study as diverse as speech, biology, theatre, education and journalism.
Faculty members from the Arkansas Tech Departments of Education, Biology and Speech, Theatre and Journalism helped Eshelman put the group together.
Friday’s performance will be re-broadcast on KXRJ 91.9 FM at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7.
