Dr. Robin E. Bowen is Executive Vice President and Provost at Fitchburg State University in Fitchburg, Massachusetts (July 2011 to present). She serves as the chief operating officer in the absence of the President and oversees all academic programs at the university. These include 14 academic departments, the Division of Graduate and Continuing Education, the Amelia V. Galluci-Cirio Library, the Regional Economic Development Institute, Enrollment Management, Institutional Research and Effectiveness, Assessment, the Crocker Center for Civic Engagement, International Education and the Center for Teaching and Learning. She is currently chairing the universitys strategic planning process and actively participates in all aspects of university administration. Dr. Bowen has been involved in development and fund raising including donor cultivation and stewardship.
In addition to having been a full-time faculty member for 14 years, Dr. Bowen has served in a series of administrative positions including Acting Department Chair at Texas Tech University, and as both Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Dean of the School of Graduate and Professional Studies at Rockhurst University. Prior to joining Fitchburg State, Dr. Bowen was Interim Provost at Donnelly College and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Washburn University. During her career, she has served as an administrator in both public and private universities, overseeing liberal arts and professional programs in both union and non-union environments serving undergraduate, graduate, traditional and nontraditional students.
Dr. Bowen is a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and currently serves the Association as the Higher Education Representative to the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education. She previously served AOTA as an accreditation evaluator and as a member of the national Standards and Ethics Commission. As a member of the Council of Graduate Schools, she served as Chair of the Council of Graduate Schools Masters Committee, a member of the Professional Doctorates Task Force and a consultant to universities developing graduate programs. She was a member of the Massachusetts Board of Higher Educations Developmental Math Taskforce, and is currently a member of the NERCHE think tank for chief academic officers.
Per her commitment to serving the community, Dr. Bowen has been an active member of numerous organizations including the local Community Development Corporation, the Kansas Childrens Service League and the YWCA Race Committee and has served on the Board of Directors of the United Neighbors of Fitchburg, the Johnson County Foster Childrens Association, the Coalition for Independence Independent Living Center, and for Harmony KC.
Dr. Bowen received a Doctorate of Education from Texas Tech University in Higher Education with an emphasis in Administration in1988, a Masters of Education in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Arkansas in 1983, and a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from the University of Kansas in 1982. In addition, Dr. Bowen has participated in several executive leadership development programs including the Management and Leadership in Education Institute at Harvard and the Executive Leadership Academy sponsored by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and the Council of Independent Colleges.
