Coordinator of Student Recruitment Hired

Jessica E. Birchler has been selected for the position of Coordinator of Student Recruitment at Arkansas Tech University – Ozark Campus. 

Birchler is a 2004 graduate of Ozark High School and has a Bachelor of Arts-History from UAFS, where she made the Dean’s List, was a University Ambassador, and was an Academic Scholarship Recipient. 


Jessica resides in Ozark where she is a current board member of Main Street Ozark. She enjoys spending time outdoors, canoeing, and photography.



Harris' Fund Scholarships for Arkansas Tech – Ozark Campus

Through the generosity of Richard and Lexie Harris of Ozark, two non-endowed scholarship funds has been established through the Arkansas Tech University Foundation for the purpose of providing scholarships for students attending Arkansas Tech University – Ozark Campus. 

The two scholarships are in honor of the couple’s fathers, Benny R. Harris and William “Bud” Rue. Richard Harris, Chief Student Officer at Arkansas Tech University – Ozark Campus said, “Arkansas Tech has been a large part of our lives and we wanted to give something back to our fathers as well as Arkansas Tech.”


Benny R. Harris is the father of Richard Harris and is a 1969 Graduate of Arkansas Tech University Degree in Business Administration and is employed with Liberty Bank in Russellville. Harris continues to support Arkansas Tech University and its mission by serving as Vice Chairman to the Foundation Board and on their Finance Committee. Harris said, “I began college in 1965 under the work study program which allowed me to obtain a degree in Banking and I’ve been the field for the past 35 years.” He added, “There is not a better program in the state for Business and Accounting than at Arkansas Tech.”


William “Bud” Rue is the father of Lexie Harris and is a 1969 Arkansas Tech University Graduate with a BS in General Business. Mr. Rue is now retired after 35 years as the Manager of Key Accounts at Arkansas Valley Electric Co-op. Rue’s ties to the Ozark Campus run deep, he has served on the Board of Advisors in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration beginning in 1971, later became a member of the Board of Advisors for the campus and was involved in the merger process in 2003 which led to Rue becoming a current member of the Board of Advisors.



Hiles Honored on Veterans Day

An awards’ ceremony honoring the distinguished service of veteran and tech student, Mr. Francis J. “Frank” Hiles was held on Wednesday, November 11 at 2:00 p.m. in the Student Services’ Conference Center at Arkansas Tech University – Ozark Campus. The event was hosted by Congressman Boozman’s Office.


Hiles received sixteen Medals of Honor by Lt. Colonel Gray, Senior Military and Veterans’ Advisor for Congressman John Boozman.


Dr. Jo Alice Blondin stated,"Veteran's Day is always a great day of remembrance and reflection.  This Veteran's Day was particularly special because we honored one of our own for his dedicated military service, a student and member of the Tech Family, Mr. Frank Hiles.  Mr. Hiles served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and for students to know that this brave man sits next to them in class is a reminder of the sacrifice made daily by our military."


Community Roundtable Meeting Held

The annual OG&E Roundtable meeting was held at the Student Services’ Conference Center of Arkansas Tech University – Ozark Campus last week. Dana Craig gave a presentation titled “Positive Energy Together” to crowd of approximately 40 local business and industry representatives.


Study Exchange from Chile' Visit Ozark

Arkansas Tech University – Ozark Campus and the Rotary Club of Ozark hosted a reception last week to honor a Group Study Exchange from Chile’.

The Rotary Foundation’s Group Study Exchange program is a unique opportunity for businesspeople and professionals between ages of 24 and 40 who are in the early stages of their careers. The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits in paired areas of different countries. For four to six weeks, team members experience the host country’s culture and institutions, observe how their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas.

In a typical four-week tour, applicants participate in five full days of vocational visits, 15 to 20 club presentations, 10 to 15 formal visits and social events, two to three days at the district conference, three to four hours per day of cultural and site tours, and three to four hours per day of free time with host families.

As a part of their stay in the Ozark area, this group visited the Mt. Magazine Lodge, Arkansas Tech University – Ozark Campus, St. Mary’s Church, Aux Arc and Post Wineries.


Rotarians in the host area provide for meals, lodging and group travel within their district. Local Rotarians that volunteered as host families were: Dr. Jo Alice Blondin, Lester Davis, Tony Wilson, T.F. White, and John Robison.

Arkansas Tech University Ozark Campus Adult Education offers classes at no charge.  These classes include keyboarding, computer literacy, English as a Second Language, traditional and online GED courses.  Refresher classes are offered in math, writing, and language, as well as preparatory work for college entrance exams such as Compass and TEAS. 

Stop by one of our Adult Education Centers nearest you; Ozark is located across Highway 23 from Arkansas Tech University Ozark Campus, or call Sherry Brown or Vicky Spurr at 667-3520.  Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, with Wednesday hours from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Booneville is located at the Booneville Training Site or call Christy McCollough at 675-4326.  Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, with Wednesday hours from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Paris is located at 103 East Pine Street or call Judith Davis at 963-6962.  Hours are 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

"Why Should We Recycle" Presentation given by 2008 Graduate

Deidra Lunsford, Plant Manager of Green Source Recycling in Clarksville was a guest speaker this last week in the Business Technology Management class at Arkansas Tech University – Ozark Campus. The title of her presentation, “Why Should We Recycle?” was received with excitement and inspiration.


Lunsford graduated in 2008 from Arkansas Tech – Ozark’s Business Technology Program.



Public Safety Officer Hired




Chris A. Rambo has been hired as the Arkansas Tech University - Ozark Campus’ Public Safety Officer. 


Rambo is a 1992 graduate of Lavaca High School and a 1998 graduate of the Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy.  He is ACIC/NCIC certified. 


Before coming to Arkansas Tech – Ozark, he had 10 years of services as a Police Officer with the City of Ft. Smith. 


He resides in Charleston, Arkansas.   



Leatherman Wins John Irving Book



Ms. Stephanie Leatherman of Montezuma, Indiana, (formerly of Ozark) was the winner of an author signed copy of The Fourth Hand by John Irving.  Thank you to all that visited Arkansas Tech University - Ozark Campus Adult Education Center to help celebrate Adult Education Week.





Brown Completes Training




Ms. Sherry Brown, Adult Education Coordinator at Arkansas Tech University - Ozark Campus has successfully completed an intensive two-year training program and is now a Certified Manager in Program Improvement (CMPI). This certification is the first of its kind in the adult education and literacy field and signifies her as a member of an elite group of professional managers.

Strong, professional leadership is critical to program improvement and high quality adult education and literacy services. That is why the National Adult Education professional Development Consortium and Pro literacy joined forces to develop the Leadership Excellence Academies (LEA) training initiative. The Academics are built upon a foundation of research, theory, professional wisdom, and best practices. Training occurs over time and with opportunities for application through a series of interim activities and learning projects.

Participants that successfully complete the LEA training may apply for certification and their activities and learning projects are thoroughly reviewed. Those who demonstrate a grasp of the material, and successful applications of what they learned, become a Certified Manager in Program Improvement.

Brown is one of the first CMPI recipients in the nation. Arkansas Tech University - Ozark Campus is proud of her commitment to continuous improvement and to providing the highest quality educational services to the adult learners in our community.




Student Government Association Officers Elected



Arkansas Tech University - Ozark Campus announces election results for the 2009- 2010 Student Government Association (SGA).
  

Dr. Jo Alice Blondin, Chancellor, hosted a luncheon this past week for the newly elected SGA representatives. Blondin stated, "Student Government is a critical aspect of any university because it provides the student body with a formal structure for governance and it offers its participants with leadership development opportunities."

"Bridges Out of Poverty" Workshop Held



Arkansas Tech University - Ozark Campus hosted community-focused workshop entitled "Bridges Out of Poverty" on Friday, September 18 in the new Student Services and Conference Center. The workshop was designed to assist those who work with at-risk populations, in better understanding the circumstances of poverty. The focus of the workshop was based upon Ruby Payne's Bridges Out of Poverty book. The half-day event was facilitated by Monieca West of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education.  Ms. West is certified to deliver the content of this workshop.


SGA Collects for Food Bank


The Student Government Association of Arkansas Tech University - Ozark Campus collected 435 pounds of food for the Franklin County Department of Human Services food bank. The food drive was a part of the annual welcome back luncheon. This year's cost to attend was a donation for the local food bank.
