for Pre-service and In-service Grade 5-8 Teachers

            The UAMS Partners in Health Sciences (PIHS) program presents “Healthy Lungs” professional development workshops for grade 5-8 teachers. These workshops are very interactive with audience participation in activities which can be used by students. The workshop is designed to increase the trainee’s knowledge and understanding of the pulmonary components of the cardiopulmonary system and its major diseases, lung cancer and emphysema. These workshops are supported by a grant from the Arkansas Cancer Coalition. The workshops will be presented by Bob Burns, Ph.D., Director of the PIHS program and Professor in the Department of Neurobiology and Developmental Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).

            A workshop will be held on Monday, April 28, 2008 at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, Arkansas. The workshop will be from 9:00 AM – 12:00 Noon with registration beginning at 8:30 AM. Each Teacher will receive a “Resource Kit” which contains the following items: 1) Illustrated syllabus (with laminated color images for use with students), 2) plastic lung model, 3) lung demonstration apparatus, 4) sponge lung smoking kit, 5) elastic band and 6) 3 contact hours of continuing education.
