II.    (6 hours):  GLOBE for the Elementary School

GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) is a worldwide hands-on, primary and secondary school-based science and education program. GLOBE's vision promotes and supports students, teachers and scientists to collaborate on inquiry-based investigations of the environment and the Earth system working in close partnership with NASA and NSF Earth System Science Projects (ESSPs) in study and research about the dynamics of Earth's environment.  This statement taken from the GLOBE website (http://www.globe.gov) provides a good overall description of this program.  Schools (K-12) from all parts of the world are posting observations and provided real-time data and observations for global scientists to use on a daily basis.  Your faculty would be trained in the Elementary Globe Program and will be shown how AR Science Frameworks in K-4 can be taught using this program.

The MSI will provide a GLOBE certified trainer to conduct the training of your faculty.  Once trained and certified, the teachers and their students can go online participate in the world wide GLOBE program and have access to data from around the world.  All teachers will be trained in the protocols necessary for this certification.  The cost of the training includes a weather station for the school.  [$600]

Teachers will be introduced to a variety of new programs, web sites, and software available to aid in the classroom atmosphere for both management lesson planning, student interaction and subject specific applications.  [$600]

IV.  (3 hours):  Planning for Parent Night

Conducting a Family Math and Science Night is an excellent way to demonstrate for the parents and guardians of your students the methods utilized in the classrooms during the school day to teach their children.  Selecting proper activities to include is not that hard of a task, but how the activities are presented to the parents is important.  [$400]

V.     (6 hours):    Integrating Technology into Elementary Mathematics

Participants will learn how to use the TI-10 and TI-15 calculators in the elementary classroom helping students to understand the process of mathematics.  [$600]

VI.  (3 hours):   Sweet Success in Math and Science

Teachers will experience a variety of ways that they can teach science and math using common manipulatives.  The activities are designed to help students to develop concepts and internalize information.  They are hands-on and inquiry based activities which encourage participation and content acquisition by the students.  [$400]

VII.            (3 hours):   Science and Math--A Real Connection

The activities will focus on ways that math is used to interpret science.  How to create graphs and interpret information will be the focus.  Activities will explore how to gather data and create graphs that represent the data. [$400]

VIII.        (3 hours):  Science and Literature

Teachers, working in groups, will explore a variety of literature appropriate for K-4 with a science twist.  They will develop an understanding of how to integrate science and literature.  [$400]
