The Virtual Classroom featured Dr. Mary Ann Rollans, Dean of the School of Community Education and Professional Development and Associate Professor of Education at Arkansas Tech University, Russellville, Arkansas. Dr. Rollans discussed the educational opportunities in emergency management, more specifically the degree program offered by Arkansas Tech University in Emergency Administration and Management. The program is endorsed by FEMA as part of the Higher Education Initiative that hopes to see a degree program in emergency management in every state. Arkansas Tech University is the second institution to offer a bachelor's degree in emergency administration and management.
The University worked closely with FEMA and consulted with other expert sources to determine the type of curriculum needed for the four-year degree program. MARY ANN ROLLANS, Ph. D.
MARY ANN ROLLANS is the Dean of the School of Community Education and professional Development and Associate Professor of Education at Arkansas Tech University, Russellville, Arkansas. She also serves on the faculty of Webster University teaching in the MBA program at the Little Rock site. She holds a doctorate in adult education from the University of Arkansas and has experience working in the public and private sector as well as teaching at both the secondary and postsecondary level.
She currently is the Director of the Bachelor of Science degree program in Emergency Administration and Management. The program was established last year and now has over 65 declared majors. Dr. Rollans is active in the field of workforce development and also directs four associate degree programs. She promotes business-education partnerships through the Chambers of Commerce and Economic Development agencies in the service area. She is a leader in the development of collaborative ventures between education and the private sector as the result of initiating the Educators-in-Industry program which is designed to provide graduate credit for educators to learn first-hand about area businesses and industries.

The Bachelor of Science degree program in Emergency Administration and Management is designed to educate students and inservice emergency management providers about the human and physical consequences of natural and technological disasters and how to mitigate them. The program addresses competencies required of emergency management professionals in careers in federal, state, or local government, with specific emphasis on emergency response agencies.
The program also addresses the growing demand for emergency management personnel in corporate settings and other private sector entities which are responsible for hazardous materials, health and safety issues, and environmental concerns. The curriculum provides a broad interdisciplinary program of study to support the technical specialty courses with emphasis in such areas as: sociology, psychology, public administration, business, human resources management, research and statistics, planning and forecasting, criminal justice, and communications.
