Connecting to the wireless network at Arkansas Tech

(These instructions assume you are running Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2. If you do not have Service Pack 2 installed please update Windows by visiting http://update.microsoft.com/)

Arkansas Tech University offers wireless internet access in several places around campus. There are available wireless networks in the Technology Center, Corley Building, and Doc’s Place. Wireless G technology is only available in the Technology Center. The wireless access points in Corley and Doc’s Place use wireless B technology.

How to Connect

1) Verify the wireless hardware is working

  • Open the Computer Management window. To do this right click on "My Computer" and click "Manage"

  • Once the Computer Management window is open, click on “Device Manger.”

  • There should be a list of devices in the pane on the right. Find the “Network Adapters,” and click the “+” to the left of it.

  • Your wireless adapter should appear under Network Adapters. It should not have a yellow exclamation mark or a red “x” next to it. If there is no exclamation mark or “x” your wireless is properly installed.

2) Connecting to a wireless access point

  • Click once on the wireless icon on the taskbar to open the Wireless Network Connections window.

  • Double click on "ATU-Wireless".

  • You will be informed that that access point is unsecured. Click “Connect Anyway.”

  • After a wireless connection is established you should see a bubble that looks similar to this

3) Test your wireless connection

  • To test your wireless connection, simply open an internet browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Netscape) You will first get a page like the one below. You will need to log in using your OneTech ID and password or an email address to continue to the internet.

Depending on whether windows is set to manage the wireless connections; you might use another application to connect to a wireless network. You can disable that application by opening it and unselecting an option similar to “use this tool to manage wireless network connections” or selecting something similar to “let windows manage wireless network connections.”
