Elizabeth Clair Barnhouse
English Education, May 2013
I transferred to Arkansas Tech University at the beginning of my sophomore year. I continued a degree program in English, soon switching to English Education. Arkansas Tech offered several opportunities for me to build my resume, as well as excel academically. After joining Greek Life, I was elected Vice President of both Sigma Tau Delta and Phi Mu. During the summers, I served as a Summer Ambassador at Tech, volunteered as a mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters, and worked as the Fine Arts Program Specialist for the local Boys and Girls Club. During my education at Tech, I was able to interact with students during several observation experiences through the Department of Education. My final semester at Tech I completed an internship at Russellville Junior High, teaching eighth grade English. Thanks to several conversations and workshops with Career Services, I felt confident and professional whenever I went to job interviews. Mrs. Tribble made sure that my resume, cover letter and references were impeccable! My classroom experiences and community activities helped me confidently answer questions posed by potential employers. I was offered two teaching positions; ultimately, I selected a job at El Dorado High School teaching 9th grade Pre-AP English in a "New Teach" School. I am thrilled to be a part of a new movement in education. Graduating Summa Cum Laude from Arkansas Tech University in May 2013, will be one of my greatest achievements, but getting involved on campus and utilizing the resources available to me are what ensured my success.
