Musical performance includes private study, class piano, class voice, and ensembles. In numbering applied music courses, the first digit, numeral 1, is used for freshman and sophomore level courses; the numeral 3 for junior and senior-level courses. Applied Music (private instruction) requires permission of the department head and is required of all music majors. Applied music students may be assigned participation in designated ensembles in addition to required ensembles. Ensembles are given in the curricula in Music and Music Education.
