MMT 2083, HYDROGEOLOGY
FIELD TRIP TO BRUSHY ISLAND LANDFILL

In the Spring of 1995 we took a field trip to see work that was being done to evaluate a parcel of land adjacent to the active Brushy Island Landfill for expansion of the landfill. The landfill was owned by Waste Management of Arkansas, Inc., Chip Nemath being the chief operator. RUST Environment and Infrastructure was the firm conducting the investigation for Waste Management. Michael Caldwell, P.G., was the chief investigator. When we visited, they were conducting a drilling program to evaluate the distriburtion of sediments and hydrologic units in the subsurface. The landfill is in unconsolidated sediements on the western edge of the "Mississippi embayment". The subsurface geology there is surprisingly complex.

Below are a few photos from that field trip:

Above: What a place for a field trip--the beautiful Brushy Island Landfill!! Workers use heavy equipment to spread waste over geotexile and bury it with soil.

Left: The drill rig used in the investigation. Note the drill rods laid out ready for deeper drilling. Right: Close up of dirllers operating the rig.

Left: Drillers recover subsurface material with a split-spoon sampler. Right: Sample tube is opened and the sample is being looked at. Previous samples are wrapped for sending in to the lab for analysis. This is a gray sandy clay with some marine fossils in it, apparently from the Midway Group.
